<Greetings from the Director>

The Mekong region used to be viewed as a peaceful rural area but various international initiatives, such as the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) economic cooperation program, have undertaken development in the region and made steady progress in lifting its people out of poverty. Bordered by rising states, such as China and India, the Mekong region, sometimes dubbed the "ASEAN of the land", will continue to achieve outstanding growth. Indeed it is necessary now to contemplate the region's future broadly, from perspectives of economics, sociology, geography, history, and political science. To do so embarks on a timely project of the "rediscovery of the Mekong."

In this regard, the Institute of Mekong Regional Development has been established to provide a platform for conducting studies and freely exchanging information on the future of Mekong regional development. We strongly welcome the participation of researchers, policymakers, and business people who share an interest in the economic and social advancement of the region.

<Research purpose>

East Asia and the ASEAN region are forecast to be the world’s growth centres of the 21st century. These regions have recorded impressive economic development and firmly established their position as the "Workshop of the World." Here the Mekong region, which mainly comprises the "latecomers" of ASEAN, has long faced the challenges of eliminating development gaps and improving the physical and institutional connectivity of its land borders. There has, however, been important resolution of such problems in recent years. Meanwhile, as earlier ASEAN member countries concern themselves with the so-called "middle-income trap," countries in the Mekong region are accelerating the pace of their development.

The Mekong region, which encompasses the territories formerly known as Indochina, has a remarkable diversity of history, culture, and economic and social systems. The diversity is reflected in the separate national visions of the states in the region. Even so, they share an aspiration of attaining economic development consistent with the ASEAN Community's concept of "respect for diversity and unity."

Epistemic Research Institute of Mekong Region (ERIMeR) wishes to promote and encourage interdisciplinary research devoted but not limited to the following areas and themes:

1. Original in-depth development studies of the Mekong region

2. Comparative studies of the development of the Mekong and other regions of the world

3. Culture and history

4. Relationships between the Mekong region and states beyond the region.

On behalf of the Institute, I am happy to extend a warm welcome and our cooperation to all who share our hopes for cultivating the deep and advanced understanding of our region.
